Kathgodam Station to Kainchi Dham: A Stopover Guide
If you’re passing through Kathgodam by train and want to see Kainchi Dham, here’s a straightforward way to plan the stop.
How far is it?
Kainchi Dham is about 20 km from Kathgodam railway station, roughly 40–50 minutes by road depending on traffic near Bhowali. The route runs through Bhimtal and Bhowali before reaching the ashram at Kainchi.
Getting there from the station
From Kathgodam station, you can hire a taxi directly, or arrange a car in advance. The road climbs steadily once you leave Kathgodam, with views opening up past Bhimtal.
A simple day plan
- Arrive at Kathgodam station in the morning.
- Store your luggage if your room isn’t ready yet — most stays near the station will hold bags until check-in.
- Head to Kainchi Dham for the morning and early afternoon, when the ashram sees fewer visitors.
- Return to Kathgodam in the afternoon, with time to rest before your next train or your night in the area.
If you’re staying overnight
Many travellers use Kathgodam as a base the night before or after visiting Kainchi Dham, since it sits right at the point where the hills begin and the plains end. A room near the station makes an early start, or a late return, easier to manage.
What to bring
Comfortable shoes for walking around the ashram grounds, a light jacket in winter — the hills run noticeably cooler than the plains — and cash for local transport, since not every driver accepts cards.
Nearby stops
If you have extra time, Bhimtal and Sattal are both a short detour off the same route, each worth an hour or two if you’re not in a rush.
